Recessed lighting installation is one of the most requested upgrades in Cranston, Johnston and Smithfield kitchens and living rooms. A few rules make the difference between a room that glows and a room full of hot spots.
Spacing
Divide ceiling height by two for the spacing between lights, and keep lights about three feet off the walls. An 8-foot ceiling means lights roughly four feet apart.
How many
A 12 by 14 kitchen typically takes six to eight 4-inch LED fixtures. Living rooms with lamps need fewer. We lay it out with tape on the ceiling before cutting anything.
Color temperature
2700K is warm and cozy for living areas. 3000K is the sweet spot for kitchens. 4000K reads as office lighting. Many LED cans now have a selectable switch.
Dimmers
Always. A compatible LED dimmer transforms recessed lighting. Smart dimmers let you set scenes; see our smart home wiring page.
Insulation and old ceilings
Insulated ceilings need IC-rated fixtures. Plaster and lath ceilings in older homes need care and the right hole saw — our crews work in them weekly.
