Standby Generator Sizing for Rhode Island Homes: How Many kW Do You Really Need?

From nor'easters to hurricanes, Rhode Island loses power every year. Learn how to size a whole house standby generator and what Generac installation involves.

By the Variable Electrical team · Rhode Island

After each big storm our phones light up from Narragansett to Cumberland with the same question: what size generator do I need? Here's how we answer it during a generator installation consultation.

Start with what must run

Heat, well pump, sump pump, refrigerator, a few lights and outlets. For most homes that is 10 to 14 kW. Add central air and you're at 18 to 22 kW. Add an EV charger and an electric range and you're in whole-house territory at 24 to 26 kW.

Automatic vs manual

A standby unit with an automatic transfer switch starts itself within seconds. A portable generator with a manual transfer switch and inlet box is a cheaper way to protect essential circuits.

Fuel

Natural gas where available; propane elsewhere. We coordinate with your gas company or propane supplier and handle all the electrical.

Placement and permits

Generators need clearances from windows and doors and a level pad. We handle permits and the utility inspection throughout South County and the rest of the state.
