1. Breakers trip when you run two appliances
If the microwave and the toaster together trip a breaker, or the dryer and the air conditioner can't run at the same time, the circuits are overloaded. Sometimes a dedicated circuit solves it; often the panel itself is out of capacity.
2. Lights dim when large loads start
A brief dip when the well pump or compressor starts is normal. Noticeable, repeated dimming means the service is undersized for the house.
3. You still have a fuse box
Fuse boxes are usually 60 amp services. They are not automatically dangerous, but decades of oversized fuses and corroded holders are common, and insurers increasingly require replacement.
4. The panel is a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Sylvania
These brands have documented failure rates where breakers fail to trip under fault. If you see the Stab-Lok name or a Zinsco label, schedule an electrical inspection and plan on replacement.
5. Warmth, buzzing, or scorch marks
A panel should be silent and room temperature. Any buzzing, heat or discoloration is an emergency electrician call, not a weekend project.
6. You're adding an EV charger, heat pump or addition
A Level 2 charger alone draws 40 to 60 amps. Pairing an EV charger installation with a 200 amp panel upgrade is the most common combination we install across East Greenwich and Barrington.
7. No room for new breakers
Tandem breakers stacked into every slot is a sign the panel is maxed. A sub panel or full upgrade gives you room to grow.
